Morris Pert
Bob Warseck

Morris Pert was born in Arborath, Scotland in 1947. He graduated B. Music from Edinborough University in 1969, and, on an Andrew Fraser scholarship, went on to study composition and percussion at the Royal Academy in London, where he was a pupil of Alan Bush. While at the Academy he won several prizes, including the 1970 Royal Philharmonic Award for his orchestral work, "Sumba'Ata". A two-year period, working with the world-famous Japanese percussionist Stomu Yamash'ta followed.

In the 70's Pert was one of the most prominent composers of his generation, receiving regular BBC commissions for large-scale orchestral works, including the first and second symphonies. Among his other works are an electronic ballet score "Continuum" for the London Contemporary Dance Theater, a third symphony, "Ancient Rites" (a piece for choir and strings), "Chromosphere" for five players, "Luminos" for basset horn and piano, and "Eoastrion" for E-flat clarinet.

At the same time, he was one of the foremost percussionists in the world of popular rock music. He worked for 18 years as a session musician in the major London recording studios, having recorded with (among many others) Paul McCartney, Andrew Lloyd Weber, John Williams, Kate Bush, Michael Oldfield, Peter Gabriel, Phil Collins, and Brand X. In 1977 Pert was voted the No. 4 jazz and rock percussionist in the world by Billboard Magazine. He has recorded five gold albums.

He now lives and works in his own small studio in the far North-West Scotland, concentrating on composition and electronic recording techniques, and is currently working on his fourth symphony. Much of his music is inspired by the symbolism and culture of the ancient inhabitants of Scotland, the Picts, and by his interest in the philosophical implications of the sciences of astronomy, cosmology, and astrophysics.

Bob Warseck graduated from the University of Connecticut in genetics and biochemistry with a minor in astrobiology. He studied piano for many years, later adding composition theory and classical guitar at the Royal Conservatory of Music in Toronto, Ontario.

From Morris Pert: "I originally wrote 'Voyage in Space' for solo piano as an introduction for more advanced students (and teachers) to the freedoms of contemporary notation, where bar-for-bar accuracy was not necessarily the main aim, but where beauty of sound and the creation of atmospheres was the prime objective. I was therefore delighted when Bob came to me with the idea of turning the 20 short pieces into a single major work for pure electronics. Now the whole sound-world of 'Voyage' could be expanded over the complete audio spectrum; and the textures and colors, from the simplest to the most complex, could be created. The result, for me, is extremely satisfying and I hope that you will enjoy taking this journey into space with Bob and myself."
